In case, Teotihuacan is a new destination for you. Let us tell you why it needs to be added to your travel bucket list. This beautiful city in the State of Mexico, meaning “the place where the gods were created,” is a delight on many levels, and if you love to experience rich, unique architecture, history, and culture, this a fantastic destination to visit.
Whether you wish to explore Teotihuacan in-depth or visit as an add-on to your Mexico adventure, it is well worth the time. Let’s take a closer look at why you should visit Teotihuacan, Mexico.
Witness Incredible Architecture
Teotihuacan was the largest pre-Hispanic city in Mexico and is home to many amazing pyramids and temples. In 1978, UNESCO gave them the status of a World Heritage Site for being so unique.
The highlights include the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. But merely walking among the buildings is breath-taking.
Delve into a Wealth of History
Before visiting Teotihuacan, we advise visiting the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, as it has archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions that adequately explain the rich history of Teotihuacan, which dates back to 400 BCE (before the common era).
Once you have been to the museum, you’ll have more context as to what you will see when you explore the abandoned city of Teotihuacan.
We think that visiting the Anthropology Museum, is so imperative to your overall experience that we included it in our Mexico City Break Tour, which consists of 3 days in Mexico City and one in Teotihuacan.
Climb a UNESCO monument
You are free to climb the ancient pyramids! They are tall structures with stairs. Only a low level of fitness is required to reach the top. Whatever your age, you’ll feel like a kid in a Lego store, when you see the pyramids. The ambiance here is so electric that you won’t be able to contain your wonder and excitement.
The epic views from the top of the pyramids are spectacular. Make sure your phone is fully charged or that your camera has plenty of films, as you’ll get snap happy!
Admire Unique Art
The way the city of Teotihuacan was designed is mind-blowing as its super complex. As you walk down the “Avenue of the Dead” and see the magnificent family residential compounds, you’ll be admiring art! The art of design.
But even more intriguing are the colorful art murals. They were used to not only decorate the walls of caves, palaces, and temples but also to memorialize the values, religion, and culture of the Teotihuacan society.
Keep your eyes open for the mural “The Great Goddess of Teotihuacan.” This will be a photo opportunity you won’t want to miss.
Nobody wants to travel a long distance to merely walk around a popular tourist attraction and not understand the relevance of what they see. We know this is! This is why we include a professional English-speaking tour guide in all of our tours to Teotihuacan.
When you visit Teotihuacan with us, you’ll hear everything you need to know about the past inhabitants, tools, building methods, and more. Plus, you won’t go home with any unanswered questions.
